COMMEMORATING the 50th Anniversary of the
incorporation of the Village of Pomona
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize
events of significance which exemplify the history and development of
the State of New York; each city, town, village and hamlet within the
borders of our great Empire State proudly resonates with its rich and
noble history; and
WHEREAS, It is also the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
and commemorate the anniversaries of the founding of municipalities
throughout the State, noting in turn their contributions to the fabric
and progression of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the incorporation of the Village of
Pomona; a myriad of events have been planned throughout the year to
celebrate this auspicious milestone; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous leadership of Mayor Brett Yagel, the
Village of Pomona is celebrating its anniversary through numerous events
including an Open House held on Friday, February 3, 2017, a Cultural
Center Exhibit of Pomona Artists to be held on Sunday, June 4, 2017, a
Village of Pomona 50th Anniversary Community Celebration to be held on
Sunday, June 11, 2017, and a Village of Pomona 50th Anniversary Music
Festival to be held on Sunday, September 10, 2017; and
WHEREAS, During the 1960s the owner of a large plot of land
petitioned the Town of Haverstraw for a zone change, requesting an
apartment zone; Jan Vanden Hende and Leon Klingher revised a plan to
form a village and were aided in this effort by many interested people;
and
WHEREAS, After considerable litigation, the village was incorporated
on February 3, 1967, to fulfill the vision of a close knit community,
vested in their rural roots; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, the Village of Pomona has acquired five
parks, three of which are active and two of which are preserves; and
WHEREAS, The Village of Pomona is zoned for residential one family
homes with half the village in the Town of Haverstraw and the other half
in the town of Ramapo; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the rich history and enduring
contribution of the Village of Pomona to the heritage of the State of
New York, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to join in
commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the incorporation of the Village
of Pomona so that present and future generations may come to appreciate
the unique significance which its history plays in the progression of
our State and Nation's evolution; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the incorporation of the Village of
Pomona, recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in
the life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Brett Yagel, Mayor, Village of Pomona.
