WELCOMING the members of the Robert W. Carbonaro
School Student Council upon the occasion of their
visit to The New York State Capitol, Albany, New
York, on May 23, 2017
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord
with its long-standing traditions, honoring the youth of today, and
leaders of tomorrow, whose character and achievements exemplify the
ideals and values cherished by this great State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to welcome the
members of the Robert W. Carbonaro School Student Council upon the
occasion of their visit to The New York State Capitol, Albany, New York,
on Tuesday, May 23, 2017; and
WHEREAS, The Robert W. Carbonaro School Student Council is comprised
of a special group of students in grades four through six who possess
leadership qualities that reach far beyond the walls of their school;
besides being motivated academically, the students share the common
goals of thinking of those beyond themselves, supporting those whose
voice may not be as strong as theirs, and working towards creating a
positive environment for everyone; and
WHEREAS, The Robert W. Carbonaro School Student Council participated
in an election process for the leadership positions of President, Vice
President, Secretary and Treasurer; the students wrote their own
speeches, which were revised and edited with their Student Council
teachers; they rehearsed their speeches before school and learned how to
appropriately give a persuasive speech; and
WHEREAS, The students presented their carefully prepared speeches in
front of students from grades three through six; every student was given
the opportunity to vote in a booth with an electronic ballot system via
a computer; and
WHEREAS, The following students were elected as a result of this
process: President, Olivia Lane; Vice President, Grace Kim; Secretary,
Caraline Scanlon, and Treasurer, Olivia Valinotti; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the school year, the Robert W. Carbonaro School
Student Council has raised significant funds for numerous worthy
organizations including the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island,
"Pennies for Patients", which benefitted children battling leukemia and
lymphoma, and monthly fundraisers which assist needy families and to
raise money for its scholarship to a South High School graduating senior
who started their education at the Robert W. Carbonaro School; and
WHEREAS, In addition, the Student Council organized a school-wide
carnival and created a school store to help raise funds for upcoming
events, and collected food for families in the area as well as for
Island Harvest; and
WHEREAS, The Robert W. Carbonaro School Student Council also
coordinated Career Day for students who wrote about and dressed up as
their future professions, and hosted a VIP Day where students identified
positive role models in their lives and shared narratives with their
favorite person; and
WHEREAS, With their sense of civic duty and their commitment to
others, the members of the Robert W. Carbonaro School Student Council
represent the best development of the potential which is inherent in our
most precious resource, our youth; and
WHEREAS, This occasion presents an opportunity for this Legislative
Body to wish the members of the Robert W. Carbonaro School Student
Council continued success throughout their school years and beyond; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
welcome the members of the Robert W. Carbonaro School Student Council
upon the occasion of their visit to The New York State Capitol, Albany,
New York, on May 23, 2017; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the members of the Robert W. Carbonaro School Student
Council.
