REMEMBERING the victims of the Haitian Earthquake
of January 12, 2010

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to remember those
who lost their lives to the tragic earthquake of January 12, 2010 in
Haiti; and

WHEREAS, The sacrifice of the men and women of the government of
Haiti, the U.S. Government, the United Nations and the people of the
State of New York for their response to the calamity is acknowledged;
and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body reaffirms support and
solidarity with the people of Haiti as they work to rebuild their
neighborhoods, livelihoods and country; and

WHEREAS, After the magnitude 7.0 earthquake, it is estimated that
230,000 to 316,000 died, about 300,000 were injured, and 1.5 million
people were initially displaced as a result of the devastation; and

WHEREAS, A cholera outbreak struck Haiti in the wake of
reconstruction and humanitarian efforts, contributing to thousands of
deaths and hundreds of thousands of cholera cases throughout the
country; and

WHEREAS, The United States has a population of nearly 1 million of
the Haitian diaspora, with approximately 200,000 Haitians residing in
the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, The United States, the international community and the
people of New York work to provide relief, recovery and aid efforts to
rebuild after the disaster; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
remember those who lost their lives in Haiti in the wake of the
devastating earthquake of 2010.
