COMMENDING Nayeema Khan upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by the National
Action Network, West Nassau Chapter on March 17,
2018
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Nayeema
Khan upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by the
National Action Network, West Nassau Chapter to be celebrated at its 5th
Annual Prestigious Women's Gala Awards on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at
Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York; and
WHEREAS, This year's theme is "Destined for Greatness"; Nayeema Khan
truly exemplifies this theme for her demonstrated exemplary work,
services, and commitment to the people of her community; and
WHEREAS, National Action Network (NAN) is one of the leading civil
rights organizations in the United States with chapters throughout the
country; founded in 1991, by Reverend Al Sharpton, NAN works within the
spirit and tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to promote a modern
civil rights agenda which includes the fight for one standard of
justice, decency and equal opportunities for all people regardless of
race, religion, nationality or gender; and
WHEREAS, In 1985, Nayeema Khan immigrated to the United States after
spending time in Bangladesh, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom; in 1988,
she began her career as an elementary school teacher in the New York
City School System; and
WHEREAS, After 10 years of service, Nayeema Khan became a high
school math teacher at the Institute for Student Achievement; she then
earned her Master of Science degree in human resource management from
the New School University; and
WHEREAS, Today, Nayeema Khan holds the title of Chairperson of
Khan's Tutorial, a tutoring and mentorship academy with 10 locations
serving New York City outer boroughs; in this capacity, she manages a
staff of 400 leaders and instructors, who provide additional educational
needs to approximately 3,500 families each week; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Nayeema Khan has been instrumental in
promoting Khan's Tutorial through various major news outlets; and
WHEREAS, Nayeema Khan is also a founding board member of Khan
Foundation, which focuses on women's education and leadership access;
this passionate advocate has been a featured speaker at many summits at
the United Nations, such as the International Women & Girls Day in
Science; and
WHEREAS, For her steadfast and unremitting commitment to education,
Nayeema Khan has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades
including a Congressional Honor from Representative Joseph Crowley, the
2017 Danny Glover Power of Dreams Award, the Municipal Outstanding
Contribution to Education Award, several citations, and was recognized
by the NYPD Muslim Officers Society and Society of Foreign Consuls; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Nayeema Khan has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Nayeema Khan upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by the National Action Network, West Nassau Chapter on March
17, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Nayeema Khan.
