HONORING Andrea M. Brown upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition at the 2nd
Annual Women's History Month Celebration on March
23, 2018
WHEREAS, Women's History Month, celebrated each year in March, is a
time to reflect upon and pay tribute to the women of our State and
Nation for their contributions to their communities and their
professions; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that women of
every economic, ethnic, and religious background have made significant
contributions to their community and to the State of New York, and it is
appropriate to recognize them and to publicly acknowledge their
endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among us all; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Andrea M. Brown upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition at the 2nd Annual Women's History Month Celebration to be
feted on Friday, March 23, 2018, at the Grinton I. Will Library in
Yonkers, New York; and
WHEREAS, Andrea M. Brown has truly devoted herself to the welfare of
her community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Andrea M. Brown was born the eldest of eight children in
Tarrytown, New York, where she was a student at local public schools;
after graduating, she attended Westchester Business School, and
Westchester Community College; and
WHEREAS, From June of 1975 to August of 2002, Andrea M. Brown was
employed by Westchester County; throughout her tenure, she rose through
the ranks, holding the position of Executive Secretary to the
Commissioner of Planning at the time of her retirement; and
WHEREAS, Andrea M. Brown then worked in various capacities for
Classic Westchester Temporary Agency, Abbott House, City of Yonkers,
Office of the City Council Majority Leader, and Shiloh Baptist Church in
New Rochelle, New York; currently, she serves as a Special Assistant to
New York State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins; and
WHEREAS, Andrea M. Brown began her life of servitude at a young age
as a participant in various high school clubs and her church; after she
married the late Bernard G. Brown, Sr., she moved to Yonkers, New York,
where she volunteered her time and energy at her oldest daughter's
pre-kindergarten class at School 25, and joined the Parent's Group at
the Nepperhan Community Center, where she served as a vital member and
President of the Board; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Andrea M. Brown has been actively involved
with numerous worthy organizations such as NAACP, Yonkers Board of
Education, Empire State Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, Hudson
River Community Association, Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church, and
Women's Civic Club of Nepperhan, Inc., as well as CSEA; and
WHEREAS, For her steadfast and unremitting commitment to her
community, Andrea M. Brown was the recipient of many awards and
accolades including the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Profile Award by
Yonkers Martin Luther King Commission, and Community Service Awards by
the Bethany A.M.E. Church, Nepperhan Community Center, and Dominican
Cultural Association; and
WHEREAS, Andrea M. Brown was also named a Woman of Distinction by
the New York State Senate, and Woman of the Year by Bethany Lutheran
Church, the Women's Civic Club of Nepperhan, and the Luther V. Garrison,
Sr. Masonic Foundation Scholarship Committee; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her two children, three
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom have shown her
love and support and rejoice in her many achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned our
recognition and applause; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Andrea M. Brown upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition at the 2nd Annual Women's History Month Celebration on March
23, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Andrea M. Brown.
