LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating Sock Out Cancer Day, in conjunction
with the observation of National Cancer Survivors Day

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official
days that are set aside to increase awareness of serious health issues
that affect the lives of citizens of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate Sock Out Cancer Day, in conjunction with the observation of
National Cancer Survivors Day; and
WHEREAS, First envisioned by Chairman, President and CEO of Security
Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, Bruce Boyea, and his wife,
Cheryl Boyea, Sock Out Cancer is a new initiative that was launched for
the first time in February of 2017; the program was formed to help fami-
lies in New York's Southern Tier navigate the road to recovery from
cancer by providing financial assistance while they are dealing with the
disease; and
WHEREAS, Consumers bought the bright, multi-colored socks representing
different cancers at the Sock Out Cancer Benefit Concert featuring
William Close and The Earth Harp Collective at the Forum Theatre in
Binghamton, New York, on March 10, 2017; and
WHEREAS, Sponsored by Security Mutual Life Insurance Company of New
York, Chemung Canal Trust Company, Visions Federal Credit Union, WBNG,
and other committed community supporters, the William Close and The
Earth Harp Collective also held a sold-out concert on May 10, 2017, with
all proceeds benefiting the Sock Out Cancer Campaign; $60,000 went to
UHS and another $60,000 went to Lourdes Hospital; and
WHEREAS, In addition, people bought the cheerful socks during Sock Out
Cancer Week in March of 2017; and
WHEREAS, Cancer creates an enormous strain on a family, both
emotionally and financially; Sock Out Cancer strives to ensure a family
afflicted with cancer can put all of their efforts into supporting their
loved one instead of struggling to pay bills or dealing with ordinary
living expenses such as rent or mortgage, utility bills, gas for their
vehicles, and groceries, as well as so much more; and
WHEREAS, Sock Out Cancer assists families who have been referred by
case workers at the region's two largest cancer centers, Lourdes Hospi-
tal and UHS; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate Sock Out Cancer Day, in conjunction with the observation of
National Cancer Survivors Day; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Bruce Boyea, Chairman, President and CEO, Security Mutual
Life Insurance Company of New York; and his wife, Cheryl Boyea.
