COMMEMORATING the 10th Anniversary of the Urban
Male Leadership Program (UMLP) at Lehman College

WHEREAS, New York State's commitment to education is unparalleled;
its history and stature are secured by the superlative caliber of its
educational professionals and the students they inspire; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare
of the community and its citizenry; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Urban Male Leadership Program
(UMLP) at Lehman College celebrated at a brunch on Saturday, February
25, 2017, in Bronx, New York; and

WHEREAS, The UMLP at Lehman College, established in 2006, focuses on
the retention, academic success and graduation of African American and
Latino male students; and

WHEREAS, Through aggressive and sustained academic intervention,
mentorship, as well as leadership and character development services,
the UMLP provides students with the academic, social and leadership
skills to successfully navigate their field of study to become highly
energized and thoughtful leaders on the Lehman campus, their
communities, and within their educational and professional pursuits; and

WHEREAS, With their workshop series, Passport to Success, personal
on-campus volunteerism, service as peer educators, and agreeing to serve
as academic mentors to newly inducted students, UMLP students make a
formal investment in their education and the future of students at
Lehman College; and

WHEREAS, Over the years, the UMLP has provided support services to
over 2,100 students, many of whom have graduated and now serve in
government or the corporate and not-for-profit sectors; many are
entrepreneurs or have pursued post-baccalaureate degrees; and

WHEREAS, Under the luminous leadership of Director Michael A. Deas,
Lehman College has been able to sustain this dynamic program, providing
increased academic and mentorship support, personal development,
character enrichment and leadership development training for their
deserving students; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Urban Male Leadership Program
(UMLP) at Lehman College; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Michael A. Deas, Director, Urban Male Leadership Program,
Lehman College.
