HONORING Chavelle Carty upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the Youth Leadership
Award by the Community Council for Medgar Evers
College, Inc. on April 27, 2019

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those young people within the great Empire State who have
made strong contributions to their communities and who serve as role
models for their peers; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Chavelle Carty upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the Youth Leadership Award by the Community Council for Medgar Evers
College, Inc. to be celebrated at its Annual Spring Scholarship and
Leadership Awards Luncheon on Saturday, April 27, 2019; and

WHEREAS, In the late 1960s, a diverse group of residents, clergy and
elected officials formed the Community Council to provide access to a
quality college education for students living in central Brooklyn; and

WHEREAS, Medgar Evers College was established in 1970, by the
Community Council, along with New York City University in honor of Civil
Rights leader Medgar W. Evers, who recruited black residents to register
and vote; and

WHEREAS, Currently a senior at Medgar Evers College Preparatory
School, Chavelle Carty is an exceptional student-athlete, maintaining a
solid 94.99% GPA; she successfully completed eight AP courses and was
named a 2018 College Board AP Scholar; and

WHEREAS, Actively involved in her school, Chavelle Carty is a member
of the volleyball team, a student tutor, and holds the title of the
co-President of Girls Who Code; and

WHEREAS, After graduating, Chavelle Carty plans to attend college at
either Rochester Institute of Technology, North Carolina A & T State
University, Central Connecticut State University, SUNY Buffalo, or SUNY
Canton; and

WHEREAS, With her sense of civic duty and her commitment to others,
Chavelle Carty represents the best development of the potential which is
inherent in our most precious resource, our youth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Chavelle Carty upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the Youth Leadership Award by the Community Council for Medgar Evers
College, Inc.; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Chavelle Carty.
