HONORING David O. Carpenter, MD upon the occasion
of his designation as recipient of the Third Age
Achievement Award for Education by the Senior
Services of Albany

WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
David O. Carpenter, MD upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the Third Age Achievement Award for Education by the Senior Services
of Albany, to be celebrated at its 23rd Annual Awards Luncheon on
Friday, May 10, 2019, at Wolferts Roost Country Club in Albany, New
York; and

WHEREAS, Each year, this auspicious event recognizes the
contributions area residents and professionals have made in their
communities during the Third Age of their lives; Dr. David O. Carpenter
is truly deserving of this prestigious award; and

WHEREAS, After earning his degree from Harvard Medical School, Dr.
David O. Carpenter began his long and distinguished career in research
and public health, working for the National Institute of Mental Health
and the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute; and

WHEREAS, Dr. David O. Carpenter was then appointed Director of the
Wadsworth Center for Laboratories and Research of the New York State
Department of Health; in this capacity, he initiated efforts to create a
partnership between the Department and the University at Albany,
resulting in the creation of the School of Public Health in 1985; he was
appointed as the founding Dean of the School of Public Health, a
position he held until 1998, when he returned to the faculty; and

WHEREAS, Today, Dr. David O. Carpenter holds the title of Director
for the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at
Albany, which has been designed as a Collaborating Center of the World
Health Organization, as well as Professor of Environmental Health
Sciences within the School of Public Health; and

WHEREAS, Considered to be an expert in his field, Dr. David O.
Carpenter has had more than 435 peer-reviewed articles published, six
books, and 50 reviews and book chapters to his credit; he is the
co-Editor-in-Chief of Reviews on Environmental Health and
co-Editor-in-Chief of the Environmental Pollution; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their

profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor David O. Carpenter, MD upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of the Third Age Achievement Award for Education by the Senior
Services of Albany; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to David O. Carpenter, MD.
