COMMENDING Herman W. Miaski posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation for special recognition
by Rensselaer County at its Honor a Deceased Veteran
Ceremony on October 9, 2018
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Herman W. Miaski posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor a
Deceased Veteran Ceremony to be celebrated on Tuesday, October 9, 2018;
and
WHEREAS, Herman William Miaski, affectionately known as Bill, was
born on February 23, 1929, in Averill Park, New York; in the early
1930s, Bill and his late parents, Helen (Leavenworth) and Anson W.
Miaski, brother, Edmond W., and four sisters, Lois, Rita, Vera and
Sharon moved to East Greenbush, New York; and
WHEREAS, After graduation from Columbia High School in 1946, Herman
W. Miaski enlisted in the United States Army on September 25, 1946, and
proudly served his country during World War II; and
WHEREAS, As a member of the 25th Infantry Division, 90th Field
Artillery Battalion, Herman W. Miaski was stationed in Japan, where he
spent time in several cities including Tokyo, Nara, Koshien, Kobe,
Osaka, Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Oji and Nishinomiya; and
WHEREAS, An expert rifleman, Herman W. Miaski was the recipient of
the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal - Japan;
and
WHEREAS, After three years of active duty, Herman W. Miaski served
as an Army reservist until his honorable discharge on December 2, 1952;
and
WHEREAS, Herman W. Miaski returned to his hometown and worked in
various capacities through the years including mason, general contractor
and truck driver; from June of 1975 until December of 2005, he was
employed as a carpenter with the Engineering Department of Albany
Memorial Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Herman W. Miaski was also the co-owner of Garfield Tree
Farm in Stephentown, New York; in this capacity, he sold Christmas trees
to the residents of the Capital Region for almost three decades; and
WHEREAS, Devoted to his community, Herman W. Miaski was a faithful
member of the Greenbush Reformed Church and served as a volunteer
fireman for the town of East Greenbush in the 1950s; and
WHEREAS, An avid baseball fan, Herman W. Miaski played in the Albany
Twilight League for several years, and during the 1970s, he played
softball; he was also an exceptional bowler and enjoyed spending time in
the great outdoors, whether it was hunting or fishing, taking
photographs, or simply reading a good historical book or magazine; and
WHEREAS, Herman W. Miaski died on June 7, 2010, at the age of 81;
and
WHEREAS, Herman W. Miaski is survived by his loving wife, the former
Barbara Popiel; one devoted son, Anson William Miaski; and two treasured
grandsons, Ryan Anson and Adam William; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited their patriotism both at home and abroad,
these men and women demonstrated their love for their country and merit
forevermore, the highest respect of their State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Herman W. Miaski upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor a Deceased Veteran
Ceremony on October 9, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Herman W. Miaski.
