COMMEMORATING the 100th Annual Convention and
Education Expo of the New York State School Boards
Association
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those organizations which are committed to enhancing the
quality of education in the State of New York, and which enable our
schools to offer excellent educational programs in the most efficient
manner; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Annual Convention and Education Expo of the New
York State School Boards Association to be held October 24-26, 2019, at
the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center; and
WHEREAS, The New York State School Boards Association's (NYSSBA)
Annual Convention and Education Expo is the largest statewide event
which brings together more than 2,000 education leaders who discuss the
needs, interests and issues of concern to school board members across
the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Staying true to its mission, NYSSBA strives to provide
leadership to school boards through advocacy, information and programs;
this vital organization serves more than 680 local school boards and
boards of cooperative educational services (BOCES), which represent more
than 5,200 members; and
WHEREAS, In general, school board members are the educational
leaders in their communities; these elected local officials and, with
few exceptions, volunteers, determine the policies which govern the
operation of their local public school systems; collectively, they guide
a statewide school system which expends over $73 billion, employs nearly
520,000 people and serves more than 2.5 million children; and
WHEREAS, NYSSBA provides information, training and advice on matters
affecting school boards, and collaborates with other educational and
related organizations to promote excellence in education for public
school students; and
WHEREAS, NYSSBA was founded in 1896, in Utica, New York, as the New
York State Association for School Boards; in 1920, the name changed to
the State Association of School Boards and Trustees of New York State,
and by 1929, it became the Associated School Boards and Trustees of the
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1932, the organization merged with the New York State
Association of Central Rural School District Boards to form the New York
State School Boards Association, which was then incorporated in 1935; 10
years later, the expenditure of public funds payable as dues to the
Association was given a legal foundation in Education Law by the state
Legislature; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is very pleased to have this
opportunity to salute NYSSBA for its long history of purposeful endeavor
which has greatly benefited the communities of New York State; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Annual Convention and Education Expo of the New
York State School Boards Association; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the New York State School Boards Association.
