COMMENDING Dr. M. Stanley Whittingham, upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of the
coveted Nobel Prize

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Dr. M. Stanley Whittingham upon the occasion of his designation
as recipient of the coveted Nobel Prize to be celebrated on December 10,
2019, in Stockholm, Sweden; and

WHEREAS, The Nobel Prize is named for Alfred Nobel and awarded to
scientists with outstanding achievements in the field of physics,
chemistry, medicine, literature and peace; and

WHEREAS, Dr. M. Stanley Whittingham, a distinguished professor in
chemistry and material science and engineering at Binghamton University
was awarded the prize for chemistry on Wednesday, October 9, 2019, for
his pioneering research which led to the development of the lithium-ion
battery; and

WHEREAS, The batteries, according to Dr. M. Stanley Whittingham,
could potentially transform electric vehicles, making them more
efficient and mainstream; he also notes the impact they could have on
home-energy storage, stimulating the development of more
environmentally-friendly homes; and

WHEREAS, Born in 1941, in Nottingham, United Kingdom, Dr. M. Stanley
Whittingham received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in
the 1960s from the University of Oxford before coming to the United
States as a post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. M. Stanley Whittingham began his illustrious career at
Binghamton University in 1988, after 16 years at Exxon Research and
Engineering Company where he received the patent for a rechargeable
lithium-ion battery; and

WHEREAS, A truly brilliant scientist, Dr. M. Stanley Whittingham is
Binghamton University's first ever Nobel Laureate; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Dr. M. Stanley Whittingham, upon the occasion of his designation
as recipient of the coveted Nobel Prize; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dr. M. Stanley Whittingham.
