HONORING Helen Murrain Covington upon the occasion
of her designation as recipient of the Trailblazer
Award by Emmanuel Baptist Church on February 28,
2020

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made
significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and

WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Helen
Murrain Covington upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the Trailblazer Award by Emmanuel Baptist Church to be celebrated at its
5th Annual "EBC Honors: Coming to EBC" on Friday, February 28, 2020, in
Brooklyn, New York; and

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve
the best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration
and cannot be sufficiently extolled; and

WHEREAS, Helen Murrain Covington was born in Montserrat, West
Indies; she relocated to New York City as a child; and

WHEREAS, After attending college, Helen Murrain Covington worked for
the law firm Bower & Gardner as an assistant to a senior partner; she
later joined the External Relations staff of New York City College of
Technology of the City University of New York, and served as Director of
Alumni Relations until her retirement in 2010; and

WHEREAS, Helen Murrain Covington has given not only of her time and
energies but also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and
consequently has been designated for special honor; and

WHEREAS, Helen Murrain Covington has been an active member of
Emmanuel Baptist Church for many years; she is also a long-time patron
of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; in addition, along with her
husband, William, she supports the Boys Club Educational Program and
many other organizations; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Helen Murrain Covington has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Helen Murrain Covington has
displayed throughout her life; and

WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent
of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to
Helen Murrain Covington, that future generations may know and appreciate
her admirable character, her many benevolent deeds, and the respect and
esteem in which she is held by her peers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Helen Murrain Covington upon the occasion of her designation as
recipient of the Trailblazer Award by Emmanuel Baptist Church; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Helen Murrain Covington.
