HONORING William J. Covington, Esq. upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Trailblazer Award by Emmanuel Baptist Church

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made
significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and

WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor William J.
Covington, Esq. upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Trailblazer Award by Emmanuel Baptist Church to be celebrated at its 5th
Annual "EBC Honors: Coming to EBC" on Friday, February 28, 2020, in
Brooklyn, New York; and

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve
the best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration
and cannot be sufficiently extolled; and

WHEREAS, William J. Covington was born in Charlotte, North Carolina;
he grew up and attended schools in East Harlem, New York City; after
graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy, he furthered his education and
attended Yale University before earning his juris doctorate from New
York University School of Law; and

WHEREAS, Over the course of his career, William J. Covington worked
as an attorney with several major corporations, including Prudential,
and ABC and NBC television networks; and

WHEREAS, William J. Covington has given not only of his time and
energies but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and
consequently has been designated for special honor; and

WHEREAS, A true asset to his community, William J. Covington is a
retired corporate attorney; and

WHEREAS, William J. Covington has been a member of Emmanuel Baptist
Church since 1985; he was an active member of the Emanuel Baptist Church
Men's and Total Praise choirs; he also served as chairperson of EBC's
board of trustees and worked as the church's attorney; and

WHEREAS, It was through his involvement at Emanuel Baptist Church he
met his wife, Helen, who was an active member of the church; the couple
married in 1995: and

WHEREAS, Throughout his service to the community, a period of
constructive involvement, William J. Covington has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and


WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which William J. Covington has
displayed throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent
of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to
William J. Covington, that future generations may know and appreciate
his admirable character, his many benevolent deeds, and the respect and
esteem in which he is held by his peers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor William J. Covington, Esq. upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of the Trailblazer Award by Emmanuel Baptist Church; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to William J. Covington, Esq.
