HONORING African Refuge Inc. upon the occasion of
its designation as Nonprofit of the Year by the
Neighborhood Technical Assistance Clinic on June 9,
2020

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made
significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and

WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals and organizations it wishes to
recognize for their valued contributions to the success and progress of
society and publicly acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the
basic humanity among us all; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor African
Refuge Inc. upon the occasion of its designation as Nonprofit of the
Year by the Neighborhood Technical Assistance Clinic to be celebrated at
its 13th Annual Gala, A Salute to New York City's Nonprofits and the
Neighborhoods They Serve, on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, at Giando on the
Water, Brooklyn, New York; and

WHEREAS, African Refuge is a community-based organization which is
dedicated to improving the quality of life for marginalized youth,
families, senior citizens, immigrants and refugees; and

WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, this vital organization
enhances the well-being of people who have faced abuse, poverty,
desertion, depression and the effects of war by promoting community
engagement and facilitating access to meaningful resources and
activities that promote the dignity, development and health of youth and
families; and

WHEREAS, Since 2003, African Refuge has been actively engaged in
meeting the needs of the Park Hill and Stapleton community; and

WHEREAS, Diverse in nature, these community members represent a mix
of immigrants and refugees from Africa and the Caribbean, as well as
Hispanics and African-Americans living together, each with unique yet
similar problems; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, the community is surrounded by the largest
settlement of Liberians of the Diaspora outside of Liberia, West Africa;
and

WHEREAS, The success of African Refuge is in direct correlation to
the efforts of its dedicated staff and volunteers, whose involvement is,
and always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an
unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in
all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the community it serves;
and

WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to African Refuge; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor African Refuge Inc. upon the occasion of its designation as
Nonprofit of the Year by the Neighborhood Technical Assistance Clinic on
June 9, 2020; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to African Refuge Inc.
