MOURNING the death of Arlene Stringer-Cuevas, a
former New York City Councilwoman, distinguished
citizen and devoted member of her community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Arlene Stringer-Cuevas of Riverdale, New York, died on
Friday, April 3, 2020, at the age of 86, due to complications related to
the novel coronavirus; and

WHEREAS, Arlene Stringer-Cuevas was born in The Bronx on September
25, 1933, and was proud to be a lifelong New Yorker; and

WHEREAS, She raised her two sons as a single Mom in Washington
Heights, where she taught public school and worked as an English as a
Second Language instructor; and

WHEREAS, Arlene Stringer-Cuevas distinguished herself in her
profession and by her sincere dedication and substantial contribution to
the welfare of her community; and

WHEREAS, A genuine trail blazer, Arlene Stringer-Cuevas was the
first woman elected to represent Washington Heights on the New York City
Council, a post she held from 1976 to 1977; prior to that position, she
served as a Democratic district leader for the area; and

WHEREAS, In 1978, she took a job at New York City's Human Resources
Administration, heading the agency's program contract analyst unit,
which she held until retiring in 1994; and

WHEREAS, Later in life, Arlene Stringer married former City Clerk
and Deputy Bronx Borough President, Carlos Cuevas; and

WHEREAS, In addition to her husband, Arlene Stringer-Cuevas is
survived by her two sons, Scott (Elyse) and David, and two
grandchildren, Max and Miles; and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Arlene Stringer-Cuevas leaves behind a legacy which will
long endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory
to all she served and befriended; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Arlene Stringer-Cuevas, and to express its deepest
condolences to the family; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Arlene Stringer-Cuevas.
