COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of the U.S.
Congress official charter of the American Legion on
September 16, 2019
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
patriotic organizations and individuals who devote themselves to the
welfare of the community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the United States Congress official
charter of the American Legion, to be celebrated at an event on Monday,
September 16, 2019; and
WHEREAS, The American Legion was founded on March 15, 1919, at the
American Club near Place de la Concorde in Paris, France, by members of
the American Expeditionary Forces; it was officially chartered by the
U.S. Congress on September 16, 1919; and
WHEREAS, The American Legion is the nation's largest wartime
veteran's service organization; it is committed to mentoring youth and
sponsorship of wholesome programs in its communities, advocating
patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued
devotion to fellow service members and veterans; and
WHEREAS, This vital organization played a leading role in drafting
and passing of the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, otherwise
known as the "GI Bill"; and
WHEREAS, In addition to organizing commemorative events, members of
the American Legion provide assistance at VA hospitals and clinics, host
career fairs, and assist veterans and service members in receiving their
benefits, such as pensions and access to the Veterans Health
Administration; and
WHEREAS, Today, membership stands at over two million in more than
13,000 posts worldwide; the posts are organized into 55 departments, one
each for the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto
Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines; and
WHEREAS, The American Legion continues its dedication to fostering
the traditions of patriotism, excellence, and commitment which have made
our nation strong; it is the custom of this Legislative Body to
recognize the significance of their contributions and to note their
worthy endeavors which have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the United States Congress official
charter of the American Legion; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the American Legion.
