COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of the Fort
Hill American Legion Post No. 376 on March 16, 2019
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare
of the community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Fort Hill American Legion Post
No. 376; this milestone was celebrated with a Centennial party on
Saturday, March 16, 2019 with dinner, birthday cake and music by DJ
Dennis and the Five Minute Idols; and
WHEREAS, The Centennial party is not only about honoring the past
100 years of its history, but also preparing to continue its legacy of
service to Veterans and their families; and
WHEREAS, Focusing on service to veterans, service members and
communities, the American Legion evolved from a group of war-weary
veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit
groups in the United States; and
WHEREAS, The American Legion organization, as a whole, traces its
roots to March 15-17, 1919, in Paris, France, in the aftermath of War;
in that same year, 16 veterans in Oxford, New York, got together, as the
original charter members, to form an American Legion post; and
WHEREAS, The group chose the name Fort Hill after a nearby historic
area in the Village of Oxford, said to have been built by Native
Americans of the Tuscarora Nation which was one of the oldest
fortifications in the east; on September 30, 1919, the Fort Hill
American Legion Post No. 376, was granted its charter; and
WHEREAS, For the past 100 years, the American Legion has grown to be
the nation's largest wartime veterans service organization; and
WHEREAS, Fort Hill American Legion Post No. 376 has always committed
to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in the
community; and
WHEREAS, Since 1994, Fort Hill American Legion Post No. 376 has been
serving an All-You-Can-Eat Sunday Community Breakfast, run solely by
volunteers; and
WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, Fort Hill American Legion
Post No. 376 advocates patriotism and honor, promotes strong national
security, and continued devotion to fellow service members and veterans;
and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous leadership of Commander Darlene Ardron,
the success of the Fort Hill American Legion Post No. 376 is in direct
correlation to the efforts of its members and volunteers, whose
involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an impressive
commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of
excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the
community it serves; and
WHEREAS, Today, the Fort Hill American Legion Post No. 376 continues
its dedication to fostering the traditions of patriotism, excellence,
and commitment which have made our nation strong; it is the custom of
this Legislative Body to recognize the significance of their
contributions and to note their worthy endeavors which have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Fort Hill American Legion Post
No. 376 on March 16, 2019; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Commander Darlene Ardron, Fort Hill American Legion Post
No. 376.
