COMMENDING the Department of New York of the Sons
of Union Veterans of the Civil War with the Allied
Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic upon the
occasion of hosting its 136th Annual New York
Department Encampment from May 17-19, 2019

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those organizations which seek to bring recognition to
historical events within the State of New York, and in doing so, help to
ensure that the complete history of our State and Nation is preserved
and shared with present generations of citizens; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Department of New York of the Sons of Union Veterans of the
Civil War with the Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic upon
the occasion of hosting its 136th Annual New York Department Encampment
from May 17-19, 2019, at the Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference
Center in Lake George, New York; and

WHEREAS, The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is
dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of heroes who fought and
worked to save the Union; and

WHEREAS, This fraternal organization's membership is composed of
male descendants of Soldiers, Sailors, Marines or Revenue Cutter Service
who were regularly mustered into Federal Service and served honorably
in, or were honorably discharged from, or died in the service of the
Army or Navy of the United States during the War of the Rebellion from
1861-1865; and

WHEREAS, Organized nationally in 1881, and in New York State in
1883, the SUVCW was chartered by Congress in 1954, making it the legal
successor to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR); and

WHEREAS, The New York Department SUVCW is headed by an annually
elected Commander, with over 14 community based camps throughout the
State; today, more than 500 men enjoy membership in the only male
organization dedicated to the principles of the GAR - Fraternity,
Charity, and Loyalty; and

WHEREAS, The SUVCW publishes The VOLUNTEER three times a year for
its members, and holds its state meetings (encampments) with its Allied
Orders; the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and
the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity
to express its highest admiration for the Department of New York of the
Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War with the Allied Orders of the
Grand Army of the Republic, and for all of the individuals who have
worked to bring proper attention to events which merits recognition in
the grand panorama of the history of our State and Nation; now,
therefore, be it


RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Department of New York of the Sons of Union Veterans of the
Civil War with the Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic upon
the occasion of hosting its 136th Annual New York Department Encampment
from May 17-19, 2019; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Department of New York of the Sons of Union Veterans
of the Civil War with the Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the
Republic.
