COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the
founding of the Town of Stafford on March 24, 2020

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the Town of
Stafford, Genesee County, New York; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious event will be observed at a Founders Day
Celebration on Tuesday, March 24, 2020; and

WHEREAS, During the winter of 1798, Joseph Ellicott and his team of
Holland Land Company surveyors erected a group of log cabins on the site
of the present-day hamlet of Stafford; and

WHEREAS, On March 24, 1820, the Town for Stafford was officially
established by the New York State Legislature from parts of the Towns of
Batavia and Leroy; and

WHEREAS, In the early 19th Century, hardworking individuals
transformed Stafford's 20,000 acres of land into a prosperous
agricultural community which helped to feed a growing nation; and

WHEREAS, Today, the Town of Stafford boasts outstanding cultural,
recreational, social and educational opportunities and attractions; its
19th Century Morganville pottery has long been recognized for its
outstanding quality and uniqueness; and

WHEREAS, Like many small towns in New York, Stafford has greatly
benefited from residents who served in the military and protected its
freedoms, and those who have volunteered their services over the past
200 years to contribute to the betterment of the community; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the last two centuries, the Town of Stafford has
successfully balanced economic development with an enduring focus on its
agricultural roots and small-town charm; and

WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the Town of Stafford continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Stafford on March 24,
2020, recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in
the life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Robert S. Clement, Supervisor, Town of Stafford.
