Senate Resolution No. 1695

COMMENDING Robert D. Shave posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peace- time, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Robert D.
Shave posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate, to be presented at the Schenectady County Honor A
Veteran Program on Saturday, June 1, 2019, at St. Luke's Pastoral Center
in Schenectady, New York; and

WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and

WHEREAS, Robert D. Shave was born to Anna (Dvorscak) and Edward L.
Shave on November 3, 1946, in Niskayuna, New York; after graduating from
Guilderland High School, he earned his associate's degree in Industrial
Technology Management from Hudson Valley Community College while working
full-time; and

WHEREAS, In January of 1966, Robert D. Shave entered the United
States Army and proudly served his country for almost two years during
the Vietnam War; and

WHEREAS, For his courageous service, Robert D. Shave was awarded the
National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign
Medal, and Good Conduct Medal; and

WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his military service on November 1,
1967, with the rank of Specialist 4, Robert D. Shave returned to the
Capital District and married his wife, the former Nora Carter on
September 21, 1968; together, they raised two daughters, Tammy and
Lorraine; and

WHEREAS, Robert D. Shave held the title of Tool and Die Supervisor
for the Watervliet Arsenal, and worked with his brother at Feuz
Manufacturing, and with his daughter and son-in-law at JDJ Comfort
Systems; and

WHEREAS, Devoted to his fellow veterans, Robert D. Shave was a vital
member of the American Legion Post 1002, Disabled American Veterans
Chapter 88, and the Polish American Veterans of Schenectady; in
addition, he served as Commander of VFW Post 357, and County Commander
of the Schenectady/Schoharie VFW; and

WHEREAS, When he was not working or helping someone, Robert D. Shave
enjoyed spending time with his loving family, especially his six
grandchildren, Andrew, Timothy, Robert, Jessica, Anna and Amanda; and
three great-grandchildren, Jaedyn, Dylan and Caius; and

WHEREAS, A man of many interests and passions, Robert D. Shave took
great pride in being able to fix anything, and could often be found
restoring his 1948 Plymouth Special, making tools, or creating projects
made of wood; and

WHEREAS, Robert D. Shave died on May 23, 2017, at the age of 70; and

WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and

WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Robert D. Shave demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore the highest respect of his State and Nation; and

WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Robert D. Shave posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed
upon an individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Robert D. Shave.
