COMMENDING A. Douglas Berwanger upon the occasion
of stepping down after 19 years of distinguished
service as Chairman of the Wyoming County Board of
Supervisors
WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
command the respect and admiration of their community for their
exemplary contributions and service on behalf of others; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished citizens who demonstrate great courage and
diligence in providing for the care and welfare of the citizens of their
communities and this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend A. Douglas Berwanger upon the occasion of stepping down after 19
years of distinguished service as Chairman of the Wyoming County Board
of Supervisors; and
WHEREAS, A. Douglas Berwanger was born and raised in East Arcade,
New York, where his son, Ed, now owns and operates the family dairy
farm; today, he continues to work on the farm in various capacities
including making one to two trips a day with a team of horses and a
horse drawn manure spreader; and
WHEREAS, After earning his degree in Police Science from Erie
Community College, A. Douglas Berwanger worked for many years with the
Wyoming County Sheriff's Department; and
WHEREAS, In 1995, A. Douglas Berwanger began his first term as Town
Supervisor for Arcade, and in 2001, he was elected Chairman of the
Wyoming County Board of Supervisors; later, he assumed the position of
Wyoming County Administrator and served in that dual role for 19 years;
and
WHEREAS, Under his luminous leadership, the Wyoming County Board of
Supervisors has taken part in an aggressive capital improvement program
over the past 15 years, replacing and renovating almost all county
buildings, and implementing a Better Pavement program in which the
County Highway Department performs a total reconstruction of at least 10
miles of road annually; and
WHEREAS, As Town Supervisor, A. Douglas Berwanger was instrumental
in the Highway Department's great success in rotating the equipment
replacement schedules, and providing a high level of services to Arcade
residents in the form of fully paved roads throughout the town,
exceptional snow and ice removal, and maintenance; and
WHEREAS, Devoted to his leadership role and his community, A.
Douglas Berwanger has served as Deputy Parliamentarian of the New York
State Association of Counties (NYSAC) Board of Directors, and was the
President of the NYSAC Chairs of County Legislative Boards; and
WHEREAS, In addition, A. Douglas Berwanger has been a vital member
of the Arcade Fire Department for the past 22 years; and
WHEREAS, In his capacity as Chairman of the Wyoming County Board of
Supervisors, A. Douglas Berwanger served with loyalty, honor and
distinction, earning him the admiration, esteem and affection of his
colleagues; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the occurrence of such a compassionate
blending of strength, leadership, intellect, and commitment as that
demonstrated by A. Douglas Berwanger over a lifetime of sacrifice and
dedication to others; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend A. Douglas Berwanger upon the occasion of stepping down after 19
years of distinguished service as Chairman of the Wyoming County Board
of Supervisors, and to wish him continued success in all his future
endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to A. Douglas Berwanger.
