BY: Senator GRIFFO
COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of Teugega
Country Club, Rome, New York
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality
of life of the citizens of the State of New York is greatly enriched by
the availability of exceptional recreational facilities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Teugega Country Club, located at
the foothills of the Adirondacks in Rome, New York, to be celebrated
with a ceremony on July 3, 2021, at the Club; and
WHEREAS, Teugega is the Native American name for the Mohawk River
Course which opened in 1900; originally, it was a nine-hole course,
situated on the Mohawk River; and
WHEREAS, In 1916, Teugega Country Club joined the United States Golf
Association; initially, the Club was designed on land which was not
suitable for a golf course; any amount of rain left the low-lying
terrain unplayable and the Spring thaw typically resulted in a quagmire
that kept golfers away until late May; and
WHEREAS, If membership was to increase and Teugega Country Club was
to grow, a new course would have to be built elsewhere; Donald Ross, a
famous golf course architect, was hired to design a new 18-hole golf
course six miles to the north of Rome at Lake Delta; and
WHEREAS, On July 2, 1921, the new course had a three-day opening
which took place during a celebration of Independence Day; and
WHEREAS, Today, Teugega Country Club endures as one of the best
remaining legacies to the work of Donald Ross; and
WHEREAS, In addition to the championship golf course, Teugega
Country Club has access to Lake Delta for boating, kayaking, a swimming
pool, tennis courts, and dining; and
WHEREAS, Teugega Country Club is committed to providing the highest
level of hospitality for members, their families and guests; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the seasons, Teugega Country Club is a
destination much appreciated by the residents of Rome, and visitors who
seek the historical, cultural, and recreational resources of the area;
it is a source of pride and community heritage to all the people of
Oneida County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Teugega Country Club; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
