Senate Resolution No. 1759

COMMEMORATING the 75th Anniversary of the United
States Women's Curling Association
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to honor those
enduring organizations which faithfully devote their resources and
purposeful energies to fostering opportunities and contributing to the
quality of life for the residents of the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the United States Women's Curling
Association to be celebrated at an event on Wednesday, February 23,
2022, at the Utica Curling Club; and
WHEREAS, In January of 1945, a group of women decided to create the
United States Women's Curling Association (USWCA) to promote and
conserve the best interests and the true spirit of the game of curling;
and
WHEREAS, The USWCA was formed into four regions, East, Central,
Wisconsin, and West, and officially became established on November 10,
1947; and
WHEREAS, In 1949, the Utica Curling Club joined the USWCA, and since
then, the following members have served in leadership positions: Mrs.
John Fitzgerald, Recording Secretary, 1952; Mrs. John Fitzgerald,
President, 1954; Mrs. Willis Wilson, Secretary, 1960; Mrs. Robert Hurd,
Treasurer, 1962-1963; Ann Burchesky, Treasurer, 1978-1979; Peggy S.
Rotten, President, 1993, under her leadership, clubs across the country
went on a Friendship Tour to Canada, where they toured the Maritime
Provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island;
Sharon Halligan, Secretary, 1993; June Baldorf, Treasurer, 1996; and
June Baldof, Treasurer, 1997; since then, many members have served on
the USWCA's Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS, In 1952, 1961, and 1982, the Utica Curling Club hosted the
USWCA's Bonspielin, and is eagerly looking forward to hosting the 75th
Anniversary of this historic women's sports club; and
WHEREAS, Today, the oldest curling organization in the United States
continues to cultivate friendly relations among its members and their
clubs, to promote international friendships, to preserve the tradition
and literature of the game and to hold women's curling events each year;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
associations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the United States Women's Curling
Association; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the United States Women's Curling Association and the
Utica Curling Club.
