COMMENDING Michael J. Dowling upon the occasion
of his designation as the 2022 Scott J. Beigel
Memorial Fund honoree
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Michael J. Dowling, President and CEO of Northwell Health, upon
the occasion of his designation as the 2022 Scott J. Beigel Memorial
Fund honoree, to be celebrated at its 3rd Annual Benefit on Tuesday,
June 14, 2022, at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club, Old Westbury,
New York; and
WHEREAS, The Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund is an organization
created in response to the tragic loss of Scott J. Beigel, a geography
teacher and cross-country coach at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School
where 17 innocent people died from gun violence; the fund provides
camperships to help send at-risk children touched by gun violence to
summer sleep-away camp; and
WHEREAS, Michael J. Dowling is one of healthcare's most influential
voices, taking a stand on societal issues such as gun violence and
immigration, issues which many health system CEOs shy away from; as
president and CEO of Northwell Health, he leads a clinical, academic and
research enterprise with a workforce of more than 78,000 and annual
revenue of $15 billion; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous direction of Michael J. Dowling,
Northwell is the largest healthcare provider and private employer in New
York State, caring for more than two million people annually through a
vast network of resources and services; his steadfast leadership has
been invaluable to Northwell Health's consistent expansion and
prominence; and
WHEREAS, Michael J. Dowling grew up in County Limerick, Ireland,
and often references his hardscrabble experiences and path of
immigration as motivation for embracing a more holistic approach which
takes into account the socio-economic factors impacting public health;
and
WHEREAS, As a compassionate voice for the needy and tireless
advocate for his patients, Michael J. Dowling led the charge to
establish Northwell's Center for Gun Violence Prevention in 2020; to
further engage healthcare professionals in identifying ways of curbing
the surge in shooting deaths, Northwell created a Gun Violence Learning
Collaborative in 2021 which has brought together more than 400
healthcare professionals nationwide to share ideas and best practices
that have proven effective in mitigating gun violence; and
WHEREAS, A champion for the underserved, Michael J. Dowling is truly
a force for positive change who works tirelessly to identify and develop
effective interventions that will save lives in the communities he so
ably serves; and
WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent
of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to
Michael J. Dowling, that future generations may know and appreciate his
admirable character, his many benevolent deeds, and the respect and
esteem in which he is held by his peers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Michael J. Dowling upon the occasion of his designation as the
2022 Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund honoree; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Michael J. Dowling.
