HONORING Sharon A. Brangman, MD, FACP, AGSF upon
the occasion of her designation as recipient of the
Edward Henderson Award by the American Geriatric
Society

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to take note of
and publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary careers, accomplishments, and purposeful lives
of service to their community and their profession; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Sharon A. Brangman, MD, FACP, AGSF upon the occasion of her designation
as recipient of the Edward Henderson Award, which was celebrated at the
American Geriatric Society (AGS) meeting from May 12-14, 2022, in
Orlando, Florida; and

WHEREAS, Each year, the Edward Henderson Award is presented to a
distinguished clinician, educator, or researcher, such as Dr. Sharon A.
Brangman who is receiving this prestigious award for her research and
clinical achievements in geriatrics, particularly for her work in
Alzheimer's disease, hospice and palliative medicine, depression, and
end of life care; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Sharon A. Brangman's Henderson State-of-the-Art Lecture
focused on the importance of including older adults who have
historically been excluded or even exploited in medical research; and

WHEREAS, A native of Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Sharon A. Brangman
earned her undergraduate degree in biology from Syracuse University, and
in 1981, received her medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical
University in Syracuse, New York; she completed residency training in
internal medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York,
where she also completed fellowship training in geriatric medicine; and

WHEREAS, Today, Dr. Sharon A. Brangman is board-certified in
internal medicine and geriatric medicine as well as hospice and
palliative care, and is a Distinguished Service Professor and Chair of
the Department of Geriatrics at SUNY Upstate Medical University and
Director of the Upstate Center of Excellence for Alzheimer's Disease
(CEAD); and

WHEREAS, In this capacity, Dr. Sharon A. Brangman developed
University Geriatricians, implemented the ACE Team, formed and is
Director of Upstate's Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program, and created
LinkAges, an innovative curriculum in geriatric medicine; and

WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Sharon A. Brangman serves as the Director
of the CNY Alzheimer's Disease Assistance Center, which serves 13
counties; and

WHEREAS, Dedicated to both AGS and her profession, Dr. Sharon A.
Brangman has held the titles of President and Board Chair and has been a

member of the Board of Directors of the AGS for 10 years; she also
served as President of the Association of Directors of Geriatrics
Academic Programs (ADGAP), and is currently, a participant of the Board
of Directors for the Health in Aging Foundation; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of her two decades of service, leadership
and vision, Upstate Medical University is creating the Sharon A.
Brangman, MD, Endowed Professorship in Geriatric Medicine which will
advance the University's mission of geriatric education by broadening
the understanding of the health issues of older adults across medical
specialties to ensure that the region's aging population receives
appropriate health care today and tomorrow; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Dr. Sharon A. Brangman has
displayed throughout her life; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of her dedication, commitment and efforts on
behalf of her community and her profession, it is the sense of this
Legislative Body to extend its highest commendation to Dr. Sharon A.
Brangman; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Sharon A. Brangman, MD, FACP, AGSF upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the Edward Henderson Award by the American
Geriatric Society; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Sharon A. Brangman, MD, FACP, AGSF.
