COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of the United
Way of Cayuga County on October 13, 2022
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare
of the community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the United Way of Cayuga County to
be celebrated on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at Chantelle Marie
Lakehouse on Owasco Lake in Auburn, New York; and
WHEREAS, For 100 years, the United Way of Cayuga County has worked
to bring people, organizations and resources together to improve
community well-being; this vital organization strives to give every
person in its community an opportunity to enjoy the highest possible
quality of life; and
WHEREAS, In 1887, the United Way was founded by church leaders in
Denver, Colorado, to coordinate services and raise funds for 22
agencies; and
WHEREAS, In 1918, many Community Chest organizations joined the
American Association for Community Organizations; between 1919-1929, the
number of organizations increased from 39 to 353, and surpassed 1,000 by
1948; the name United Way was adopted in 1963; and
WHEREAS, The Auburn and Cayuga Community Chest originated in 1922,
to solicit and disburse monies for charitable and community purposes; in
1956, it was succeeded by the United Fund of Cayuga County to continue
the improvement and development of health, character, and well-being of
the residents of this county; and
WHEREAS, In 1979, the name was officially changed to United Way to
promote identification with the National United Way movement; today,
there are over 1,800 United Way organizations reporting over $4.2
billion in contributions worldwide; and
WHEREAS, For a century, United Way of Cayuga County has stayed true
to its mission of improving lives by mobilizing the caring power of its
community by advancing the common good and addressing the underlying
causes of problems; this vital organization is dedicated to community
involvement and focused on creating long-lasting changes that will
positively affect today, tomorrow and generations to come; and
WHEREAS, The United Way Board of Directors and staff will
demonstrate their commitment to this goal by creating a special Youth
Panel program to teach students about philanthropy through proceeds from
the 100th Anniversary Gala; and
WHEREAS, The success enjoyed by the United Way of Cayuga County is
in direct correlation to the efforts of the many individuals who have
supported the development of this outstanding organization over the
years; and
WHEREAS, Equally commendable are the skilled staff at the United Way
of Cayuga County, whose involvement is and has always been characterized
by an impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an
uncompromising standard of excellence in all of their efforts on behalf
of the organization and the population it serves; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the United Way of Cayuga County upon the occasion of celebrating
its 100th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the United Way of Cayuga County.
