MEMORIALIZING Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim
March 18, 2022, as Recycling Day in the State of New
York, in conjunction with the observance of World
Recycling Day
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to set aside days
in the State of New York which recognize the importance of practicing
sound environmental procedures, protecting our precious resources, and
preserving our natural environment; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim March 18, 2022, as
Recycling Day in the State of New York, in conjunction with the
observance of World Recycling Day; and
WHEREAS, World Recycling Day will be celebrated at a recycling and
upcycling event hosted by the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe in
Shoreham, New York; and
WHEREAS, Nikola Tesla was one of the finest scientists in the modern
world, patenting the rotating magnetic field, Alternating Current (AC)
Motor and Alternating Current (AC) generation and Transmission, as well
as the Tesla coil and many other inventions; and
WHEREAS, In 1902, Nikola Tesla completed construction of his
18-story transmitting tower and laboratory known as Wardenclyffe; in
1917, it was broken down and recycled to raise funds; and
WHEREAS, A non-profit organization, the Tesla Science Center at
Wardenclyffe, was founded to restore the historic Wardenclyffe site and
open a Tesla Museum and Science Center; and
WHEREAS, Through generous contributions from businesses, community
leaders, and the people's republic of Serbia, where Nikola Tesla was
born, the Wardenclyffe property was purchased in 2013, and volunteers
began clean-up efforts; and
WHEREAS, Since then, volunteers have collected 178,510 pounds (89.26
tons) of metal for the restoration of Wardenclyffe, Nikola Tesla's only
remaining lab; in 2018, it was added to the National Register of
Historic Places by the Department of the Interior; and
WHEREAS, Recycling helps to prevent pollution, reduces the need to
harvest new raw materials, saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas
emissions, saves money, reduces the amount of waste that ends up in
landfills, and allows products to be used to their fullest extent; and
WHEREAS, The State of New York, in concert with the national and
global community, should not only set goals to recycle, but also set
goals on how to achieve the reuse of components of seemingly obsolete
objects; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim March 18, 2022, as
Recycling Day in the State of New York, in conjunction with the
observance of World Recycling Day; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Kathy Hochul, Governor of the State of New
York, and the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe.
