CONGRATULATING Roberto Lopez upon the occasion of
being named a Finalist and his twin brother Ricardo
Lopez as a Semifinalist in the Regeneron Science
Talent Search
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend and
pay tribute to those young people who, by achieving outstanding success
in educational competition, have inspired and brought pride to our
majestic Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate Roberto Lopez upon the occasion of being named a Finalist
and his twin brother Ricardo Lopez as a Semifinalist in the Regeneron
Science Talent Search; and
WHEREAS, Educational competitions which serve to better prepare our
students for their future participation in the areas of Science and
Technology are worthy of praise and support; and
WHEREAS, The nation's most prestigious science competition, the
Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS) was founded in 1942; it is the
country's oldest student research competition and is based in
Westchester County; and
WHEREAS, Two truly incredible and brilliant young men, Roberto and
Ricardo Lopez are both seniors at Brentwood High School and will be the
first in their family to attend college; furthermore, it is the first
time since 1970, twins were named Semifinalists in the Regeneron Science
Talent Search; and
WHEREAS, Named Valedictorian of his class, Roberto Lopez plans to
follow a pre-med track as he continues his education at one of the many
renowned colleges where he was accepted, including Yale, Harvard and
Columbia; and
WHEREAS, A member of the Brentwood Boys Swim Team, Roberto Lopez's
passions include swimming, research and spending as much time with his
three younger brothers as possible; and
WHEREAS, An avid volunteer in his hometown community, Roberto Lopez
often gives up any free time he has to help with events such as
assembling hundreds of Easter baskets for underprivileged children in
the area or playing Santa Claus for local elementary schools during the
holiday seasons; and
WHEREAS, Roberto Lopez was named a Semifinalist before advancing to
a Finalist in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, winning $25,000 and a
chance to compete in Washington D.C.; and
WHEREAS, With a passion for research, Ricardo Lopez plans to major
in Biology while also following the pre-med track at one of the many
prestigious colleges where he was accepted, including Yale, Columbia and
Johns Hopkins; and
WHEREAS, Captain of the Brentwood Boys Swim Team, Ricardo Lopez
serves as president of the math honor society and as a member of the
student council; and
WHEREAS, Steadfastly dedicated to the betterment of his community,
he is currently involved with the Town of Islip Youth Advisory Board for
underprivileged local youth; and
WHEREAS, Ricardo Lopez was one of just 300 Regeneron Scholars chosen
from all STS entrants to be named a Semifinalist and receive $2,000; and
WHEREAS, As two of the most promising scientists among the nation's
high school seniors, Roberto and Ricardo Lopez have truly established a
high standard of academic excellence and purposefulness of life rarely
achieved in youthful years; and
WHEREAS, In achieving this high academic honor, 18-year-olds Roberto
and Ricardo Lopez may take just pride in the inspiration and
contribution to the spirit of excellence they bring to their family,
friends, community and school; and
WHEREAS, Poised eagerly with enthusiasm and determined purpose,
these scholars now stand honorably, with just pride in their
accomplishments and in eager anticipation of future challenges,
understanding and appreciating the caring counsel and support provided
by their teachers, coaches and parents; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Roberto Lopez upon the occasion of being named a Finalist
and his twin brother Ricardo Lopez as a Semifinalist in the Regeneron
Science Talent Search; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Roberto and Ricardo Lopez.
