COMMEMORATING the 48th Anniversary of the Allen
Community Senior Citizens Center of Jamaica, Queens
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge
to the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their
past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and
valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor those
illustrious organizations of the State of New York whose purposeful
endeavors serve to enhance the quality of life for the cherished senior
citizens in their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 48th Anniversary of the Allen Community Senior Citizens
Center of Jamaica, Queens; and
WHEREAS, The Allen Community Senior Citizens Center is a
community-based agency located in Southeast Queens, providing a wide
variety of services to the senior population; funding for these vital
services is provided through the New York City Department for the Aging
(DFTA); and
WHEREAS, Organized by the former Pastor of Allen AME Church, the
late Bishop Donald George Kenneth Ming, the Allen Community Senior
Citizens Center was designed to provide activities that would lessen
isolation and seclusion and increase opportunities for socializing; and
WHEREAS, The newly incorporated center opened its doors as the Allen
Community Senior Citizens Center on March 27, 1974; under the able
leadership of the late Rose I. Jenkins, the program was expanded to
introduce educational, consumer and nutritional education programs; in
addition, a Senior Advisory Council was organized; and
WHEREAS, In June of 1982, the Allen Community Senior Citizens Center
moved to its present location inside the Allen Senior Citizens Complex;
it was through the diligent and unwavering efforts of the Reverend Dr.
Floyd H. Flake, the current Pastor of the Allen AME Church of Jamaica,
New York, the center secured these premises; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its distinguished 48-year history, the Allen
Community Senior Citizens Center has introduced many new initiatives,
including health and fitness programs, line dancing, Zumba/chair
fitness, Tai Chi, adult coloring, cultural activities, storytelling,
coffee hour and computer learning sessions; and
WHEREAS, Today, the Allen Community Senior Citizens Center provides
services to over 1,000 participants, ages 60 and over; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to recognize and
celebrate the legacy of New York's senior citizens who have experienced
tumultuous changes in the 20th Century, including the dawn of the
nuclear age, the rise of the computer, and the proliferation of the
automobile, television, technology and so many other innovations of the
American spirit, and who now represent a great and willing source of
knowledge available to our great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body
recognizes the many contributions of the Allen Community Senior Citizens
Center of Jamaica, Queens, and wishes this worthy facility continued
success in its proactive mission to benefit and nurture the communities
it represents; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 48th Anniversary of the Allen Community Senior Citizens
Center of Jamaica, Queens; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Allen Community Senior Citizens Center of Jamaica,
Queens.
