COMMEMORATING Japan Day and the 150th Anniversary
of Japan's landmark diplomatic mission to the United
States
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in keeping with
its time-honored traditions, to recognize and pay tribute to those who
foster ethnic pride and enhance the profile of cultural diversity which
strengthens the fabric of the communities of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Japan's landmark diplomatic mission
to the United States; and
WHEREAS, Japan Day is an annual festival which celebrates Japan's
landmark diplomatic mission to the United States of America; for the
first time, a Japan Parade will be held in New York City to honor the
Japanese people and their heritage; and
WHEREAS, Japan Day also serves to build a bridge of cultural
understanding between the people of Japan and the United States, and to
facilitate stronger grass-roots connections within the community; and
WHEREAS, The 1872 visit of the Japanese mission led by Ambassador
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Iwakura Tomomi, resulted in the
development of Japan-United States relations including the establishment
of the Consult in New York State; and
WHEREAS, Since those initial encounters to the present, overcoming
various trials, Japan and the United States have deepened exchange in a
variety of fields, including politics, economics, and culture, and
forged the strong and cooperative relations that exist today; and
WHEREAS, During the month of May, New Yorkers also celebrate Asian
American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month; and
WHEREAS, We are elated to celebrate Japan Parade on May 14, 2022, to
commemorate the friendship between the United States and Japan, and
further strengthen the solidarity of the Japanese-American Community on
this milestone anniversary; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate Japan Day and the 150th Anniversary of Japan's landmark
diplomatic mission to the United States; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Ambassador Mikio Mori, Consul General of Japan in New
York.
