Senate Resolution No. 2565

COMMEMORATING the 55th Anniversary of Each One
Teach One, Inc.

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality
and character of life of the citizens of New York State are greatly
enriched by the availability of exceptional recreational institutions
which have become an important part of the history of our State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 55th Anniversary of Each One Teach One, Inc., to be
celebrated at a Rucker Pro Legends Event on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at
the Alhambra Ballroom in New York, New York; and

WHEREAS, In 1946, Holcombe Llewellyn Rucker, a New York City
Playground Director and a World War II Veteran, organized a summer
basketball league that reached thousands of youngsters in New York City;
and

WHEREAS, Throughout his 14 years of running the Summer League,
Holcombe L. Rucker was instrumental in sending approximately 700 young
people to college, many of whom went on to play in the National
Basketball Association; and

WHEREAS, Holcombe Rucker died in 1965, and the Rucker Pro
Tournament, also known as the Rucker Pro League, was created by Robert
"Bob" McCullough and Fred Crawford in his honor; and

WHEREAS, In 1967, the Each One Teach One Youth League was created
with a mission of using sports as a vehicle to prevent violence and
motivate young boys and girls to pursue higher education and to explore
various careers; and

WHEREAS, Each One Teach One specifically works with members of the
Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) community from age six,
through high school graduation; the tireless workers of this vital
non-profit truly believe individual empowerment translates to indelible
change, thus motivating radical, institutional changes in our evolving
communities; and

WHEREAS, Through subject-specific tutoring, youth leadership
clinics, and its mentorship program, Each One Teach One provides a
positive experience and opportunity for students to improve their skills
and build their self-esteem, translating to higher academic performance,
school attendance, and greater opportunities for life after college; and

WHEREAS, This is accomplished through one on one and/or small group
training in the sport of basketball; these lessons are designed to
introduce, develop and master the physical and mental aspects of the
game; and

WHEREAS, Through a variety of basketball tournaments, Each One Teach
One and its staff of experienced coaches strive to highlight the overall

development of its members in teams for both boys and girls in the 10U,
12U, 14U and 16U divisions; and

WHEREAS, For the last 55 years, Each One Teach One and its staff
have been dedicated to the inspiration, promotion, and development of
today's youth through educational and athletic programs, changing the
lives of thousands of New York City's young people; and

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body that New York
State's invaluable cultural, educational, and recreational institutions
should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of this great
State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 55th Anniversary of Each One Teach One, Inc.; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Each One Teach One.
