COMMEMORATING the 125th Anniversary of Adelphi
University

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate an enduring
pursuit of excellence in higher education for the youth of this noble
Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of Adelphi University; and

WHEREAS, Adelphi traces its roots back to Adelphi Academy (founded
in 1863), a private preparatory school located at 412 Adelphi Street, in
Brooklyn; and

WHEREAS, Through the efforts of Dr. Charles H. Levermore and Timothy
Woodruff, the charter for Adelphi College was granted on June 24, 1896,
one of the earliest granted to a coeducational college by the Board of
Regents; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Levermore became the first President of Adelphi
College, and Timothy Woodruff, a former Lieutenant Governor of New York
State, served as President of the Board of Trustees; and

WHEREAS, Classes began in September of 1896 with 57 students and 16
instructors; in 1928, enrollment surged; 652 students were attending
classes in a building designed to accommodate 560 students; and

WHEREAS, Looking ahead to the future, President Blodgett and a
committee of trustees searched for a new site for the college; the
committee selected 68 acres in Garden City, Long Island, and on October
8, 1928, the cornerstone of the first new college building was laid; and

WHEREAS, In 1943, under the able direction of Mildred Montag,
Adelphi established the first Central Collegiate School of Nursing and
the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps in New York State; created in response to
the need for nurses after the United States' entry into World War II,
the Nursing School extended Adelphi leadership in professional
education; and

WHEREAS, In 1963, the College marked its 60th Anniversary with a
three-day series of lectures and cultural events; at this time,
enrollment hit 3,667; and

WHEREAS, In 1980, The Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer
Hotline and Support Program was established; and

WHEREAS, In 2020, The Association of American Colleges and
Universities selected Adelphi as one of only 13 institutions to host a
Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Campus Center; and

WHEREAS, That same year, Adelphi won the 2020 John L. Blackburn
Exemplary Models Award from the American Association of University
Administrators for their innovative Prep for Success program; and

WHEREAS, During the 2020-2021 academic year, 7,520 students were
enrolled at the university; there were also 2,628 degrees awarded; and

WHEREAS, Adelphi University was the first private, coeducational
university on Long Island, opening the doors at its original Brooklyn
location in 1863 as the Adelphi Academy; since 1929, they have called
the scenic Garden City campus home; and

WHEREAS, Today, Adelphi reaches more students than ever before with
multiple dynamic learning hubs and convenient online options; it has
locations in Garden City, Manhattan, Hauppauge and the Hudson Valley;
and

WHEREAS, Adelphi University students have gone on to lead successful
careers; former Adelphi students have been Olympic gold medalists,
Pulitzer Prize winners, U.S. Ambassadors, New York Times Bestselling
authors, celebrity entertainers, Emmy award-winning writers and more;
and

WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, Adelphi
University may look back with pride upon its humble beginnings, find
just satisfaction in its purposeful growth and hold true of purpose in
its commitment to serving the educational needs of its students; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of Adelphi University; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Adelphi University.
