Senate Resolution No. 344

COMMENDING Nathan Bustin upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the
highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New
York State Senate

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend the caring concern and heroic acts of individuals who take
prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations, nobly risking
their own lives in an effort to preserve the life of another; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Nathan Bustin upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate; and

WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
Resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and

WHEREAS, On January 3, 2021, at approximately, 6:25pm, Nathan Bustin
was with his mother Lisa Bustin, traveling northbound on Route 481 in
the town of Cicero, New York, when his mother suddenly developed a
medical crisis and lost consciousness, causing her to lose control of
the motor vehicle; and

WHEREAS, Without hesitation, this brave young man immediately took
action by grabbing the steering wheel; he was unable to reach the brake
or gas pedals to stop the vehicle, but managed to take control, at which
time he grabbed his mother's cellphone and quickly called 911; and

WHEREAS, Amazingly, no one was injured and Nathan Bustin's mother,
Lisa Bustin was transported safely to the hospital; if not for his quick
and immediate response, the outcome of this incident could have been
much different; and

WHEREAS, The Cicero Police Department recently honored Nathan Bustin
from Clay, New York, for his actions; on January 20, 2021, a ceremony
was held at the Cicero Fire Department, where he received the CPD Life
Saving Award; also present at the ceremony were members of the Cicero
Fire Department and the North Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Nathan Bustin has displayed
throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, Nathan Bustin, in his spontaneous and heroic act, has so
aptly demonstrated his character and compassion for the welfare of
others, personifying, by virtue of his action, the collective concern of
ordinary citizens across the community of New York State who voluntarily
respond without thought of danger or reward when others are in need of
help; now, therefore, be it


RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Nathan Bustin upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Nathan Bustin.
