Senate Resolution No. 633

CONGRATULATING Detective John Fern upon the
occasion of his retirement after 20 years of
distinguished service to the Chenango County
Sheriff's Department

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished officers and citizens who would devote
themselves to public service, demonstrating great courage and diligence
in providing for the care and welfare of the citizens of their
communities and this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Within every community of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment and dedication,
command the respect and admiration of their community for their
exemplary contributions and service on behalf of others; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate
Detective John Fern upon the occasion of his retirement after 20 years
of distinguished service to the Chenango County Sheriff's Department; in
honor of this momentous occasion, he was presented with a shadow box
containing the uniform of the Chenango County Sheriff's Office, and a
flag was flown on his last day of service; and

WHEREAS, A military and reserve veteran, John Fern began his long
and distinguished career in law enforcement in 2001, when he joined the
Chenango County Sheriff's Department; due to the quality of his work as
a deputy, he was promoted to the title of Detective five years later;
and

WHEREAS, In this capacity, Detective John Fern served as a narcotic
investigator, undercover officer, sexual abuse investigator, welfare
fraud investigator, and was a crucial part of major crimes
investigations including numerous homicide investigations, all leading
to convictions; and

WHEREAS, In addition to his work with the Sheriff's Department,
Detective John Fern spent most of those years as an active member of the
Police Union known as the CCLEA and has been President of the Union for
the majority of his career; and

WHEREAS, Detective John Fern was the recipient of numerous awards
and accolades for his steadfast and unremitting commitment to the
citizens of Chenango County including 10 special recognition awards,
four commendations for going above and beyond the call of duty, 15
letters of appreciation, three letters of appreciation from outside
agencies including the State of Texas, and the 2016 Benenati Award; he
was also named the 2003 Deputy of the Year and Deputy of the Month
twice; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those
dedicated public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to the
preservation of order and the protection of others are worthy and due

full praise for their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be
it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Detective John Fern upon the occasion of his retirement
after 20 years of distinguished service to the Chenango County Sheriff's
Department, and to wish him continued success in all his future
endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Detective John Fern.
