This month, the Governor and the New York State Legislature passed the New York State Budget for fiscal year 2022-2023. As your Senator, I fought hard to make sure that this year's budget will make a real difference in people's lives on Long Island now and for years to come.
This year's State Budget includes vital investments in education, child care, tax relief, gun violence prevention, healthcare, and more. Below are just some of the highlights of what we accomplished for Long Island:
The Budget secures an additional $457 million in state financial aid for our Long Island schools so that all children on Long Island can have a world-class education. We've secured more than $1 billion for statewide universal pre-Kindergarten, generating thousands of new pre-K slots on Long Island.

The Budget contains a record $400 million Environmental Protection Fund to support climate change mitigation projects, protect our water sources, advance conservation efforts, and provide recreational opportunities for all New Yorkers.

The Budget will accelerate tax relief to Long Island families by providing the fully implemented reduced tax rates beginning in Tax Year 2023, to deliver relief to 6.1 million New Yorkers. The Budget also creates a new property tax relief credit, the Homeowner Tax Rebate Credit, for eligible low- and middle-income households, as well as eligible senior households.

To tackle the high cost of fuel, which has surged in recent months as a result of the war in Ukraine, New York will suspend the state sales tax imposed on fuel, the motor fuel tax, and the metropolitan commuter transportation district sales tax imposed on gasoline and highway diesel from June through December 2022, providing an estimated $585 million in relief for working families and businesses statewide.

The Budget includes meaningful and significant changes to our public safety laws to make our communities safer, including needed changes to the state’s criminal justice system.
These changes include:
- Allowing judges to set bail for gun charges that were previously subject only to release;
- Adding factors that judges must consider when setting bail for any bail-eligible offense;
- Closing problematic loopholes on Raise the Age and Discovery; and
- Stricter Penalties for Gun Traffickers

We made fixing Long Island's busiest roadways a top priority. The Budget secures a record $157 million for road renewal projects on Long Island, including repaving of key sections of the Long Island Expressway, Southern State Parkway, & Meadowbrook State Parkway.
