Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer and I were proud to annouce we worked out a compromise with the New York State Department of Parks to allow dogs in Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City, Queens.
I hosted a meeting at my District Office with Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer and Rachel Gordon, Director of the New York City Region and representatives of DOG LIC, a dog owners group based in Long Island City that has been pushing for access into the park.
As part of the agreement, which begins March 1, 2011 and lasts until September 1, 2011, one of the piers in Gantry Plaza will allow people to walk their dogs. This special pier will be open from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM and 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, seven days a week.
Our parks and green spaces are treasures for all local residents to enjoy. I am grateful to everyone involved for reaching a solution that allows dog owners to access a portion of Gantry State Park while still preserving space for children and those that simply enjoy laying on the grass.
