After winning the 2006 New York State Little League Championship, players and coaches from the Merrick-North Merrick Little League’s 10/11 year old team were recently treated to a special day in Albany by Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) in recognition of their achievement. The team’s championship victory in 2006 and runner up finish in 2005 mark the most successful back-to-back tournament runs in the League’s 56 year history.
Joined by their families, the team enjoyed lunch with Senator Fuschillo and Assemblyman Dave McDonough (19th Assembly District) in the State’s Legislative Office Building shortly after their arrival in Albany. Afterwards, the group received a guided tour of the State Capitol.
Once their tour was completed, the team joined Senator Fuschillo in the Senate Chamber for a meeting with the Lieutenant Governor of New York State, David Paterson. Senator Fuschillo then took the team into the Senate Majority Conference Room, where they got to meet Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno.
The day concluded with the team being formally recognized during a session of the New York State Senate. As they sat in the Senate’s East Gallery, each member got to listen while a resolution honoring their achievements was read aloud to the entire chamber.
The team’s players are Tommy Murphy, Timothy Murphy, Ryan Goldband, Danny Trepel, Tommy Yohe, Kevin Hiss, Tyler Goedtel, Jack Zajaga, Jake Schwartz, Jonathan Goldberg, Mike Mento, and Dean Brownworth. Manager Nick Yohe and coaches Bill Murphy and Bill Goldband guided the players to the championship.
"After working so hard to achieve the dream of winning a state championship, it was nice to see these young boys from our community have their moment in the spotlight here in the State Capitol," said Senator Fuschillo. "I hope to see them return as State Champions once again next year."
