Senator James Sanders Jr. said: “It is disgraceful that we have young people from the Rockaways, one as young as 15, the others in their 20s, arrested in connection with the robbery and murder of Kutin Gyimah, a Bronx cab driver who worked in Queens.  He picked up a group of five and dropped them off in Edgemere near the corner of Beach 54th Street and Arverne Boulevard on August 13, 2022. The assailants tried to rob the driver and avoid paying the fare, prompting Gyimah to give chase. One of the attackers took a swing at the victim, causing him to fall to the ground and strike his head on the pavement. He died from the injuries he sustained after falling.

This is such a sad and unnecessary incident that caused the loss of life of a hardworking immigrant from Ghana who was just trying to do his job. We have to do better to ensure our young people do not take the path of violence. There are two more suspects on the loose and I hope they are apprehended swiftly and brought to justice. Police believe the other suspects are two teenage girls between the ages of 13 and 16. It’s unbelievable that these young people – all five of them – could be involved in something so horrific. Obviously, we need to provide more guidance and help to our young people and their parents if they are getting involve in crimes such as this. Gyimah leaves behind his wife and four young children. My prayers go out to the family and loved ones. I can’t imagine the pain they are feeling right now. My office stands ready to help in any way we can.”
