Senator Jim Tedisco (R,C,I,REF-Glenville) today announced he has secured a new $50,000 state public safety grant to help save lives on the Mohawk River and Erie Canal by building a new rescue boat launch and dock for the Vischer Ferry Fire Department (VFFD) on the shore of the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve in Clifton Park.
The VFFD currently has a rescue boat but no permanent launch and dock. With the grant secured by Senator Tedisco, the VFFD will be assured access to the river during emergencies.
In the past, the VFFD has driven to a private marina in Halfmoon, or tried to gain access through the present site, hoping the river was high enough and the silt was low enough to be able to launch the boat. In some cases, they’ve had to refer emergency calls to other towns to respond.
“When seconds count, any delays encountered by our first responders in being able to do their job could mean life or death. I’m proud to have been able to secure this $50,000 state public safety grant to build a rescue boat launch for the Vischer Ferry Fire Department to help them better respond to emergencies on the Mohawk River and Erie Canal and hopefully, save lives,” said Senator Tedisco.
“The members of the Vischer Ferry Fire Department are an integral part of our first responder community, with a diverse set of responsibilities,” said Clifton Park Town Supervisor Phil Barrett. “Through the assistance of Senator Tedisco, the response time and effectiveness of the Vischer Ferry Fire Department will be enhanced, due to improved access to the Mohawk River. Clifton Park thanks our first responders and Senator Tedisco for their critical support of public safety in our community.”
“With the ever increasing recreational use of the Mohawk River and Erie Canal, this boat launch will be vital in any type of emergency situation. When every second counts this boat launch will allow the volunteer members of the Vischer Ferry Fire District to fulfill their mission of the preservation of life and property. I need to take a moment to thank Senator Jim Tedisco and his entire staff for their assistance and help with this grant application. Their tireless efforts were instrumental to the Fire District receiving the grant. It is great to have a Senator that works for and cares for the people he represents,” said Kevin Bowman, Chairman of the Vischer Ferry Fire District.
