Senator Serrano Celebrates "Las Octavitas"
On January 21st Senator José M. Serrano attended the “Las Octavitas” event at Taino Towers in East Harlem. “I am thrilled to have been able to bring the holiday season to a close with this fantastic tradition, which is a staple in Puerto Rican culture," said Serrano. "It was truly an honor to have had the opportunity to share this very special day with my community.”
Las Octavitas is a traditional Puerto Rican celebration that extends the holiday season 16 days after Three Kings Day. The event was hosted by New York City Comptroller John C. Liu, Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito, and Yolanda Sanchez from the Puerto Rican Association for Community Affairs.
The evening included traditional Puerto-Rican food, a live musical performance, and special honors to Lillian Jiménez, an acclaimed producer and media activist.
