State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. is again partnering with the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) in both June and July to bring free legal counsel to his constituents.
First, on Tuesday, June 15, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., representatives from NYLAG will be calling everyone who registers for an intake appointment through Addabbo’s office or the NYLAG website. Then again, on Friday, July 16, NYLAG will be conducting intake calls during the same timeframe for all those that register for that date.
Each session is 45 minutes long and NYLAG will call everyone at their scheduled appointment time in order to conduct an intake interview to see if the issue is something that NYLAG can assist with — if not the legal group will endeavor to provide a referral with a legal expert in that field. Translators are also available.
NYLAG can assist with legal advice on these topics:
- Housing (tenants only);
- Public benefits, Disability benefits, Healthcare benefits;
- Identity theft;
- Debt management;
- Inmate partner violence;
- Divorce and custody;
- Advanced planning.
“Legal issues are rarely simple, and can seem overwhelming for someone who has never had to deal with a situation that involves lawyers and everything that comes along with that,” Addabbo said. “For years New York Legal Assistance Group has helped my constituents navigate the legal waters and provided free legal counsel, and I thank them for continuing their efforts throughout this pandemic. Anyone who needs advice on what to do with a legal issue is encouraged to call my office to make an appointment to speak with an expert from NYLAG.”
NYLAG typically holds outreach events across Addabbo’s district through their Mobile Legal Help Center. However, in order to adhere to social distancing rules, NYLAG will be meeting with participants over the phone to assist them with their legal matters.
