MLK Day Statement From Senate President Pro Tempore Malcolm A. Smith

January 18, 2010

Today we celebrate the life of one of the greatest civil-rights leaders our society has ever known: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King was a leader of one of the most transformational movements for civil rights our nation has experienced. His peaceful demonstrations changed the world, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which led to the end of all racial segregation on Montgomery Public Buses.

He was courageous, even in the face of danger.

Dr. King believed in our potential as a society, and the good in all of us. Though his physical presence may be gone, his influence remains.

There is no better way to honor Dr. King’s dream than to continue his work so that one day we will live in a society of peace and harmony
