Senate Finance Committee to Hold Long Island Public Hearing To Discuss Governor's Proposed Deficit Reduction Plan

October 26, 2009

Albany, NY—Senator Carl Kruger (D-Brooklyn), Chair of the Finance Committee, will chair the second of four regional public hearings in Suffolk County with Senator Brian X. Foley on Tuesday to review the fiscal consequences of the Governor’s deficit closing proposals on local services and programs.
The Governor has proposed approximately $3 billion in reductions including mid-year cuts to school funding, cuts to Medicaid services, and raiding the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and Environmental Protection Fund.
The Finance Committee and those providing testimony will discuss alternative cost-saving measures to offset potential cuts.
“We remain committed to putting together a budget proposal that steers clear of new taxes and service cuts and reflects the state’s urgent mission to provide for those vulnerable constituencies who need help the most,” Sen. Kruger said. “I look forward to listening to testimony during these hearings that will both inform and guide us as we move forward in the process.”
Copies of the Finance Committee’s analysis of the deficit reduction plan and its projected impact on communities will be available to the public.
Regional hearings are also scheduled in Buffalo and Westchester County to complement those held by the Assembly in Albany and Syracuse. The Senate held the first hearing today in New York City.
