Statement From Senate Majority Conference Leader John L. Samspon On Martin Luther King Day

January 18, 2010

Today we remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the greatest Americans who ever lived.
Dr. King’s vision of a more just society, and his tireless work to realize that vision through a multiracial, nonviolent movement, transformed America and made it a better nation for everyone.
Martin Luther King, Jr. appealed to the best in us.  He called on us, as a nation, to fulfill the promise of equal opportunity for all set forth by the Founders.  And he called on us as individuals to rise above hatred and love one another as set forth in the Bible he studied.
Dr. King’s belief in peaceful social change to create a better life for the poor, for working people and for the disenfranchised of all races continues to inspire millions around the world.
Martin Luther King, Jr. dedicated his life to bringing an end to racism, poverty and war. We honor him by continuing his work today, and every day.
