Statement from Senate President Pro Tempore Malcolm A. Smith Re: Federal Funding for High Speed Rail in New York State

January 28, 2010

I am very pleased the federal government has recognized the significant impact high speed rail will have on Upstate New York by allocating $151 million to begin the process of finally upgrading our aging rail system, and laying the foundation for the future of high speed rail in New York State.
High speed rail will redefine our statewide economy and open Upstate markets to consumers across the country. The jobs and businesses investments that come with a 21st Century transit system will make every community competitive in today’s global economy. I look forward to partnering with our federal and state representatives, and the Obama Administration, to get additional funding and keep our long-term goals for economic revitalization on track.”
