Statement By Senator Toby Ann Stavisky, Chair Of The Senate Higher Education Committee

July 27, 2010

I am delighted that New York has been named a finalist for Race to the Top funding.  This means our children have an even better chance at a top notch education, and we can all agree that one of the fundamental building blocks for a successful community is a world class school system.  Top notch schools produce an educated workforce, which is the foundation for opportunity, achievement and success.
I want to congratulate Chancellor Merryl Tisch and Commissioner David Steiner’s success in pushing for the innovations that mark New York’s application for Race to the Top funding, making our state a top contender for $700 million in federal funding.  The changes in New York’s application – a teacher evaluation system that takes into account student test scores and raising the charter school cap – were things they both worked hard to accomplish, and I feel that their vision will benefit our schoolchildren going into the future.
