POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - This Veterans Day, Senator Sue Serino announced that retired United States Army Captain Alyssa Carrion has been inducted to the New York State Senate’s Veterans’ Hall of Fame. Carrion currently serves as the Program Manager for Mental Health America of Dutchess County’s Veterans Housing, Employment, Reintegration and Outreach Program, which aims to help homeless veterans throughout Dutchess County.

“Alyssa continuously goes above and beyond to help veterans throughout Dutchess County by using her own personal experiences,” said Senator Sue Serino. “Since meeting her, I knew she was a trailblazer in every sense of the word and have been in awe of the incredible work that she does each and every day for our veteran community. It is an honor to be able to induct her into the New York State Senate’s Veterans’ Hall of Fame and to recognize her for the admirable work that she does to help our local heroes. Alyssa has touched so many lives, and I cannot thank her enough for her selflessness and dedication.”

Each year, State Senators are given the opportunity to induct one individual from their District into the New York State Senate’s Veterans’ Hall of Fame to honor their dedicated service both in the military and in their community through civilian life. While inductees are typically invited to the State Capitol for an in-person ceremony in the Spring, in an abundance of caution, this year’s event was held virtually. According to a biography provided for the event, following graduation from Carmel High School, Carrion went on to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish and Portuguese. Upon completing her degree in 2004, Carrion then went on to serve in the United States Army as a commissioned officer until 2009, and then completed her Army Reserve commitment in 2012. Carrion received the rank of Captain.

Carrion was deployed to Egypt in 2006 during Operation Iraqi Freedom where she served as a Platoon Leader for the 571st Military Police Company. She then went on to serve as the Operations Officer for the 80th Ordnance Battalion and the Executive Officer for the 508th MP Detachment.

While in the service, Carrion earned the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Army Achievement Medal, two Army Commendation Medals and a Meritorious Service Medal for her exemplary service.

Upon retirement, Carrion received a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of Washington and a Paralegal Certificate from Boston University.
