On Thursday, January 28, State Senator Brad Hoylman, Ranking Member of the Senate Environmental Conservation (EnCon) Committee, participated in the Joint EnCon Budget Hearing with Basil Seggos, Acting Commissioner of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). During the hearing, Senator Hoylman questioned Commissioner Seggos on New York State’s failure to meet emissions goals set by the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, which sought to reduce emissions of fine particulate matter from diesel exhausts by retrofitting the entire fleet of state and contractor vehicles. Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to particulate matter can lead to respiratory symptoms and increased risk of heart attack.
Senator Hoylman also questioned Commissioner Seggos on the issue of toxic chemicals in children toys. As a sponsor of the Safe Child Products Act, Senator Hoylman urged the DEC to work with the legislature to limit the presence of lead and other toxins that have been found in some toys.
