*Press Release* Commemorating the Life of Thomas White, Jr.
(D-Jamaica) Senator Shirley L. Huntley passed a resolution on April 12th, 2011 in the New York State Senate commemorating the life of Thomas White, Jr. A native son of Southeast Queens, Thomas White Jr. fought for and represented the residents of South Jamaica throughout his lifetime; his illustrious career and service exemplifies the values of all who dream to make a better life for themselves and for those around them.
Thomas White, Jr. was the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Queens Village Committee for Mental Health, for Jamaica Community Adolescent Program, Inc. (J-CAP), one of the largest and most effective alcohol and substance abuse residential treatment programs in New York State. He helped to reclaim the lives of over 20,000 young men and women who had suffered the effects of abuse, misuse and addiction.
“Even though Tom White was a New York City Councilman, I often referred to him as Tom White, the advocate for Southeast Queens. He advocated for the poor, the sick, and anyone else who needed help. His legacy will be remembered as a man who rescued and changed the lives of so many through J-CAP and the commitment he had to improving his community” said Senator Shirley L. Huntley.
As a New York City Councilman from the 28th Council District in Queens, Thomas White, Jr. served from 1992-2001 and again from 2006 until his untimely death in 2010. In his three terms, he worked tirelessly and responsibly to serve and represent the residents of his district. Before he passed away at the age of 71, Tom White was still full of life, hope, and strength and was constantly trying to ensure the growth and success of the community he loved so much.
